Day-of-Exam Strategy: What to Do (and Not Do) Before Sitting for the AFK

AFK Exam

Hello future AFK test takers,
It’s me again—Dr. Sehar. If you’re reading this the night before your exam or in the final countdown, let me first say:

You’ve done the work. Now it’s time to show up smart—not stressed.

Over the years, I’ve coached so many brilliant international dentists. They studied hard, practiced questions, and knew their stuff…
But on exam day? Anxiety, lack of planning, or last-minute panic got in their way.

So today, I’m giving you my personal checklist of exactly what to do—and what not to do—on the day of your AFK exam to maximize clarity, recall, and focus.

1 Day Before the AFK Exam: Your Prep Plan

Let’s begin with the day before your exam, because how you spend this time makes or breaks your mental energy.

What To Do

  • Lightly review your error log, not everything
  • Go over your formula sheet and key pharmacology rules
  • Prepare your exam documents: ID, booking confirmation, etc.
  • Plan your route to the test center (or test environment if remote)
  • Pack healthy snacks, water, and comfortable clothes
  • Do a quick visualization of the exam going well

What NOT To Do

  • Don’t cram new material
  • Don’t compare your prep with others
  • Don’t attempt a full mock exam (you’ll exhaust yourself)

Morning of the AFK Exam: Mind and Body Sync

What To Do

  • Wake up early, with at least 2 hours before the test
  • Eat a light, protein-rich breakfast (oats, eggs, banana)
  • Meditate or breathe deeply for 5 minutes
  • Wear comfortable layers (temperature in centers varies)
  • Bring water, ID, and a pen for sign-ins

Pro tip from my students:

Write down a few motivational phrases and exam-day reminders and put them in your pocket:

“I’ve trained for this.”
“Breathe. Think. Answer.”
“Don’t rush the first 5 questions—set the tone.”

During the AFK Exam: Smart Test Strategy

This is your moment. Here’s how I advise my students to manage it:

What To Do

  • Start with a slow and steady rhythm for the first 10 questions
  • Flag tough ones, move on—don’t get stuck early
  • Use POE (process of elimination) on confusing options
  • If multiple answers are “correct,” ask:

“Which one is the best in a Canadian clinical context?”
  • Use your breaks wisely: walk, stretch, hydrate

What NOT To Do

  • Don’t fixate on one question for more than 2–3 minutes
  • Don’t second-guess yourself unless you clearly remember the right answer
  • Don’t look around or compare progress with others

Mindset Tips I Teach Before Every Mock Exam

Before every personalized mock, I tell my students these golden rules:

  • “This is not a memory test. It’s a thinking test.”
  • “Your calmness is more powerful than your notes today.”
  • “Getting 80–85% right is the goal—not 100% perfection.”
  • “Ethics, pharmacology, and radiographs—score big here.”

What If You Panic During the Exam?

It happens. Here’s your quick recovery plan:

  1. Pause. Breathe. Look away from the screen for 5 seconds.
  2. Sip water or stretch your hands.
  3. Mark the question and move forward.
  4. Remind yourself: “This is one moment in a 5-hour test. I will return stronger.”

One moment does not define your score.

FAQs: AFK Exam Day Clarity

Can I do a last-minute review on exam morning?

Only if it calms you. Stick to short notes or flashcards—not dense reading.

What should I eat during breaks?

Nuts, energy bars, fruit, and water. Avoid caffeine overload or heavy meals.

What if I see a question I’ve never studied?

Don’t panic. Use elimination, logic, and patient-first ethics to make an educated guess.
