The 3 Core AFK Math Topics You Must Master

Let’s simplify this. In my prep sessions, we focus on these three high-yield areas:

1. Pharmacology Dose Calculations

• Example: How many mg of ibuprofen are in 2 tablets of 200 mg?
  
• Or: Calculate mg/kg dosing for a pediatric patient.

What I teach:

• Use the “Desired / Have × Volume” formula.
  
• Always double-check units (mg, mL, kg).
  
• Know common safe dose ranges (e.g., lidocaine max = 7 mg/kg with epi).

2. Percent and Concentration Questions

• Example: What volume contains 3% mepivacaine?

• Example: How do you dilute 5 mg/mL to get 1 mg/mL?
  
• Or: How much of a stock solution is needed for a 1:10 dilution?

Strategy:

• Use the C1V1 = C2V2 formula for dilution
  
• Practice converting ratios to decimals (e.g., 1:1000 = 1 mg/mL)
